Thank you to the students of the Master Programm "Molecular Medcine" at the FAU for awarding me the Best Teaching Award. I feel very honored.

AG Engel has by now published in 65 different scientific journals

What an achievement. The Engel lab has by now convinced 65 different journals to publish their work. Big thank you to all former and current members of the Engel lab, the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (UKER), especially Kerstin Amann for her continous support, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and our funders DFG, Deutsche Herzstiftung e.V., BMBF, BMG, AvH Stiftung, DAAD, Manfred Roth Stiftung, Wilhelm Sander Stiftung, BZKF, and BaCaTeC.

Swati's work gets published in Nature Communications

Congratulations to Swati to her publication in Nature Communications https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-69292-5

Thank you for your hard work, your perseverance and believe in the project and me. For setting up the zebrafish facility in my lab and much more. I am very proud of you.

Silvia publishes in Journal of Cell Science as the First and "Corresponding" Author

Silvia did a great job as first and corresponding author!

Congratulations to her new publication on non-centrosomal MTOCS in the Journal of Cell Science: https://journals.biologists.com/jcs/article/139/12/jcs264166/370451/

Large project grant aiming at biofabricating functional tissues (SFB/TRR225) gets an extended funding

Great news. Our large project grant aiming at biofabricating functional tissues SFB/TRR225 has been extended for 4 years. Thank you especially to Jürgen Groll and all other members and the DFG, UKER, FAU for their financial support.

Kaveh receives the "Best Poster Award" and "SYIS-EU Impact Award" at TERMIS EU 2025

I am very proud of Kaveh. Thanks that you work in my lab and besides working very hard for your success still help everybody who asks you for help. You are for me much more than just a fantastic lab member. You fully deserve this award.

Ramona receives Dr. med. (MD) with distinction "summa cum laude"

Congratulations to Ramona Hesselbarth: she received today her Dr. med. (MD) with honors (summa cum laude). Fantastic job!

President of FAU "Joachim Hornegger" visits AG Engel

From the president: "Today, I had the great pleasure of visiting Felix Engel, Professor of Experimental Kidney and Cardiovascular Research. His lab is conducting groundbreaking research on heart regeneration and development, exploring how heart muscle cells can be stimulated to proliferate, identifying key regulators of heart formation, and investigating the role of Gpr126 in this process. Another focus is the re-expression of fetal genes in diseased adult hearts and the potential of tissue replacement therapies to repair heart damage.

Felix does it all. His work spans cutting-edge laboratory medicine, high-impact publications, patents, and successful spin-offs—covering the full spectrum from fundamental research to real-world applications. Few scientists combine these strengths so seamlessly, making his lab a true powerhouse in the field.

What also makes this environment so remarkable is the highly international team. FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg brings together outstanding researchers from around the world, creating a unique hub where top talent collaborates to tackle major medical challenges.

Seeing beating cells that could one day become heart muscle was absolutely fascinating. A huge thank you to Felix Engel and his team for an inspiring afternoon!"

Prof. Engel gives a "Keynote Lecture" at the networking meeting of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at FAU

Thanks a lot for having me as keynote lecturer at the Networking meeting of the hashtag#AvHStiftung at hashtag#uniFAU. It was a great pleasure/fantastic experience. Eternally grateful for the SKA. Congratulations to all new Humboldtians. Welcome to the AvH family. All the best for your future.

Prof. Engel now becomes the "Head of the Molecular Cardiology Lab" of the MED2/Cardiology Department as well

It is my great pleasure to announce that I am since Monday also the head of the Molecular Cardiology lab of the Med2/ Cardiology Department. A big thank you to Professor Stephan Achenbach for his trust and believe in me and his support in terms of positions and consumables.

Engel Lab once again on TV

Very excited that our work on developing a new conductive hydrogel for treating post-MI cardiac arrhythmia is being featured again on TV.
Our conductive hydrogel enhances maturity of stem cell derived cardiomyocytes and can be injected, for example by a catheter, into the infarct area of the heart to resolve arrhythmia.

Abhishek receives "DAAD Scholarship" for his Doctoral Training

Congratulations to Abhishek for receiving a DAAD scholarship for his PhD thesis in my lab on the role of aGPCR in the heart. Fantastic job!
